Virginia desperately needs to reform our criminal justice system. We should treat many drug and alcohol offenses as medical problems. We imprison far too many people for far too long. Obviously some people need to be imprisoned. Drug pushers should be imprisoned. But many drug abusers need treatment. Another issue is the school-to-prison pipeline. Virginia has the worst record in the country in sending students into prison for offenses which previously would have resulted in school-based discipline instead of criminal punishment. Some of the money we spend on imprisonment should be spent on treatment.
